Thyroid Disorders & Problems

Thyroid disease is the result of some imbalance caused in the small butterfly shaped gland positioned in the front of your neck area which produces hormones. It is caused when these hormones are created in either more or less numbers than the required, resulting into hyperthyroidism(overactive thyroid) or hypothyroidism (under active thyroid). Neither of these are good for the overall functioning of the body.

Now let us look at how unobtrusively this gland plays a crucial role in our body system. Thyroid is said to be a vital hormone gland of our body which controls the metabolism i.e. energy levels, breathing process, heart rate, nervous system, body weight, body temperature in the body. It releases certain amount of hormones in the bloodstream, thereby playing the role of greasing various organs to work smoothly. Hence though undetectable, a slight dysfunctioning of this gland crumbles down the whole body.

Hyperthyroidism is (like an overreacting girlfriend exaggerating about everything) when the gland expedites the process and produces massive amount of hormones than the required number causing an imbalance. An overactive thyroid speeds up the body functions to excess limits which is occurrence of nervousness, rapid heartbeat, excessive sweating, increased anxiety, hand tremor, unexpected weight loss, and sleep problems, among other symptoms.

And Hypothyroidism is (like when she goes silently sick about something and doesn’t react much) when the gland produces lesser amount of hormones. It slows down your body functions thereby affecting the metabolism and reducing the immunity of body which gives out symptoms like lower heart rate, fatigue, cold sensitivity, constipation, dry skin and unexplained weight gain.

In both cases you need to consult a doctor and get your blood test. This disease is one to stay with you lifelong. However it is treatable(though not curable completely), with advanced medication available to control this dysfunction, you can enjoy a normal life. So if you are suffering from such a dysfunction, DO NOT PANIC, although certain precautions (other than the prescription of your doctor) needs to be adopted like follow a certain diet, and workout to manage the excess weight gain.
